Grand Theft Auto VI is still a long way from release, yet fans are already busy building wild theories about how the story might begin. One of the most popular ideas claims that the game’s opening set piece will be a massive hurricane tearing through Leonida, the Florida-inspired state with Vice City at its heart. The theory is fuelled by trailer shots, the tropical setting and ongoing rumours about extremely advanced water and weather simulation technology.
A key piece of speculation comes from a widely shared fan post that zooms in on one of the second trailer’s scenes: Jason is working on a rooftop, seemingly repairing damage left behind by a violent storm. For many, this looks like a textbook “after the hurricane” situation, which could easily be tied to an explosive opening sequence. The logic goes that the developers like to kick things off with a chaotic, cinematic moment that immediately drags players into the world — and in Leonida’s case, a hurricane would be the perfect candidate.
The idea fits neatly with the in-game setting. Leonida clearly evokes the US Southeast’s tropical coastal regions, where hurricane season is simply part of life. The beaches, wetlands, islands and “Keys”-style archipelagos shown in the trailers all point toward a landscape that is tightly bound to water and extreme weather. A city first seen in ruins after a storm would create a sharp contrast with the sun-soaked, party-heavy image of Vice City, and underline from the opening minutes that this world is more than just selfies and nightlife.
On the technical side, things look at least as ambitious. Over the last few months, multiple leaks and rumours have claimed that the developers have poured huge resources into water physics and dynamic weather. An especially eye-catching (though unconfirmed) claim suggests that a dedicated engineering team is working on waves, floods, hurricanes and a full tide system, with a budget in the hundreds of millions of dollars just for water-related technology. While many observers doubt these exact figures, there is broad agreement that water and weather are likely to play a much bigger role than in previous entries.
If the hurricane opening actually happens, it would serve not just as a spectacular set piece, but also as a perfect showcase for the new systems. Collapsing power lines, swept-away cars, flooded streets and panicking crowds could create a tense, movie-like atmosphere, while giving players an immediate taste of how extreme weather affects vehicle handling, visibility and mission design. Fan speculation also suggests that similar storms might return later in the game as dynamic events, occasionally reshaping parts of the map and forcing players to adapt.
For now, all of this remains speculation. What is confirmed is that Grand Theft Auto VI is currently set to launch on 26 May 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The story focuses on two main characters, Lucia and Jason, a modern criminal duo trying to survive and get ahead in Leonida’s neon-soaked but unforgiving world. Whether players will be thrown straight into the eye of a hurricane in the game’s very first moments is something only the finished game will reveal — until then, there are trailers, theories and fan imagination to fill the gap.
